A lot of sensible adults advise to never stop being a kid. The unrefined youthful energy of leaping around in bounds left me sometime in High School. But one of Gasparilla Music Festival 2016’s very first performers channeled this joy and shared it generously with his family audience.
“Hey, hey, skip to my Lou, skip to my Lou my darling,” sang Mr. Tommy- the man behind the magic. If you ever wondered what it looks like when a grown man exerts 110% of himself to positively charm both children and adults alike, this is it.
As I sat to capture shots of Mr. Tommy’s show, I caught myself singing and moving along to the music. I’m not kidding! Well maybe I was… If ‘kidding’ means to relinquish adulthood for kid impulses. Just for a moment, at least.
Mr. Tommy is a Tampa-based children’s entertainer who travels around on his Mobile Music Bus, bringing music education to children around the Central Florida area and beyond.
This performance saw Mr. Tommy’s stellar one-man band extend the show to the wee ones in attendance: “Ok, if you’re brave enough, let me hear you sing!” With lyrics so simple and guitar hooks so catchy, I once again joined the chorus of voices. “I’ll play fancy,” Mr. Tommy offered, flexing his incredible guitar chops for an awe-inspired audience.
Mere kids’ act? Fun for the whole family? Regardless of your take, the small stage and big energy cemented Mr. Tommy’s performance as one of my favorites among the lineup. What a great start to Tampa’s greatest music festival!
