Bragan-Dawson disqualification upheld by SG Supreme Court

The Supreme Court at USF reached a decision in Bragan and Dawson v. the Election Rules Committee (ERC) on Saturday, Feb. 23, upholding the 10 points the ERC assessed to the Bragan and Dawson student body presidential campaign, disqualifying them from the race.

Bragan and Dawson had appealed the ERC ruling on Feb. 8 that their campaign failed to report non-monetary contributions because they did not include Pita Pitt coupons on their platform fliers in their contribution report. In a decision brief written by Chief Justice Jacob Thomas, the Supreme Court also dismissed the claim that the ERC inappropriately disseminated the decision to third parties prior to informing Bragan and Dawson, constituting a procedural error.

"Unfortunately, in this case, the ERC rules of procedure and Student Government's statutes have no rules governing how such information should be disseminated to the public," wrote Thomas.

According to Thomas, the Court will provide an extended, signed opinion by Thursday, Feb. 28 at 5 p.m.
