Socially conscious hip-hop is the bright spot in the rap game nowadays. With so many obnoxious egomaniacs running the show in the mainstream, it’s up to clever rappers like Ill Poetic and his boy Illogic to bring the underground something unique, daring, and intelligent. The rhymes are fresh and smart, straight from the streets and the library.

Wrapped in the dense beat jungle of “The World Is Ours” are engaging loops and quality production. The last two tracks return the album to wishy-washy softness and are really all that stand in the way of me calling “The World Is Ours” one of the most back-loaded hip-hop albums (at least in terms of its own relative quality) in recent memory. Without an aim at intensity Ill Poetic falls into the trap of making music that tries too hard and too conventionally to sound pretty. Beauty without texture and turmoil, man, that’s the road to Kenny G.
