When I call Brian Sella of the Front Bottoms, he is driving around a parking garage with bandmate Mathew Uychich. Getting used to life on the road, the Front Bottoms were about to get into their second night of touring with Motion City Soundtrack and the Henry Clay People. The lo-fi dance punk outfit just released their first full length album on New Jersey’s Bar/None Records. The two piece band makes their music with the frankness of a singer-songwriter, playfully poppy backbeats, and the occasional voicemail message. Not unlike the popular HBO sensation Girls, The Front Bottoms’ self -titled album starts from a place of realism. Singing songs about the grievances of their hometown, love interests and parents, the Front Bottoms’ lyrics flow smoothly with melancholy insight and catharsis. Each song a confessional, their unique voice and smart lyrics are reminiscent of a less pretentious incarnation of influential indie band, the Hold Steady.
