The USF Police Department is banding together for the 2012 Thanksgiving Click It or Ticket Enforcement Wave. The wave began on Monday, Nov. 12 and will continue until Sunday, Nov. 25.

This campaign is set up to crack down on the number of motorists who drive on campus without using seat belts.  There will be more officers on patrol to check and there may be seat belt check points set up for surprise inspections. If anyone in a vehicle is not wearing a seat belt, the driver will be issued a citation.

“While the officers are hoping they will not have to issue any citations, drivers seen without a seat belt will be issued one, without hesitation,” said Lt. Charlotte Domingo of the USFPD.

According to the Florida DMV, the charge for a seat belt citation is $30. A child who is not properly restrained results in a citation for $60.

USFPD aims for this campaign to help drivers understand that wearing a seat belt is not an option.

“With Thanksgiving being next week, and the holidays right around the corner, higher traffic volume is to be expected,” Domingo said.  “The police department knows that the first and easiest thing to do in order to ensure safety in a vehicle is to buckle up.”

USFPD hopes drivers will remember to always wear their seat belts both on and off campus well after the campaign’s end.
