It started with sirens and a voice booming over the loudspeakers: “Armed intruder on campus. Stay Inside. Lock Doors.”
In a matter of minutes the Tampa campus of the University of South Florida descended into madness. Campus police and SWAT team members armed with assault rifles charged into the library demanding that every student leave with their arms raised.
While university officials have given the all clear, the Tampa campus at the University of South Florida remains eerily quiet during the aftermath of a reported gunman on campus.
This afternoon the University of South Florida in Tampa was on lock down as university police searched for a possible gunman on campus. Shortly after 1:30 p.m., an off-campus phone call was transfered to the university police department at USF. The caller reported that he had seen a man with a gun by the library on campus. Officers responded at 1:43 p.m. by conducting a search of the library and the surrounding areas for the possible gunman.
At 2:30 p.m. officers responded to another related threat at the Bull Runner bus depot near the Parking Services building on Holly Drive. One unidentified suspect was detained at the scene. Eyewitnesses report that the suspect jumped on top of a bus and told officers that he was the man behind the threat. After he had been taken into custody he claimed that the threat was a "hoax," according to a TBO report.

The University of South Florida Police Department will conduct a Sobriety Checkpoint on the USF Campus beginning at 10:00 p.m. on September 17, 2009, and lasting until 11:30 p.m. During this time, USF Police Officers will use the Sobriety Checkpoint to identify impaired drivers. Impaired drivers that are identified will face arrest and prosecution.
The University of South Florida Police Department will host a Sobriety Checkpoint on the University of South Florida Campus beginning at 9:00 p.m on August 29, 2009, lasting until 10:30 p.m. During this time, the USF Police Department will use the Sobriety Checkpoint to identify impaired drivers in an effort to keep our streets safe. Impaired drivers that are identified will face arrest and prosecution. This operation is part of a comprehensive, collaborative approach to traffic safety by the USF Police Department.
